I keep browsing among the Little Richard CDs available on CDNow (my main source for stuff), and today I saw a new CD which will be available in February. It has a red cover. Could this be the un-overdubbed Modern stuff that Phil has been promising us from Ace UK? Another question: while browsing, I came upon a CD in which Richard is depicted wearing a sweater and sitting at the piano. It has a subtitle---"the LT Series." It had samples available, so in I went. The songs are recuts of the Specialty stuff virtually note for note, but they sounded pretty good. Are these the Modern recordings? Whatever they were, they sounded better than the Modern ones I remember. One strange thing---the first cut, "Tutti Fruiti", has what sounds like thunder behind it, and some grunts and comments from some unknown (at least to me) source. Sounded like overdubs. Sample it and you'll see. How 'bout some help on these, o Richardites!!!

Any Little Richard Modern material from Ace will obviously have the titles you see in the site Wiki "Recording Sessions".
Re. note-for-note stuff: that's the remake session from Nashville in 1976. Should only be heard in stereo and played at a lower pitch.
Re. "Tutti Frutti" with background non-verbal utterances - hey, maybe it's from the Ace CD with the live renditions.

Sounds like you want to learn alot about Richard and his catalogue. I know the frustration of reading about, or hearing some magnificent performances, only to find they were never reissued even on vinyl! Tracks from Little Star, Mercury, Atlantic, Modern, Brunswick, Mainstream, etc., still wait in the wings for their CD debut. Imagine the reaction of Louis Armstrong or Elvis Presley fans who discover that dozens of cuts from their prime periods gather mold and mildew in some abandoned warehouse.

With all due respect, you may want to try Richard 101, before you go to Advanced.

I enjoy your Forum comments! Keep rockin' and soulin', Phil

I don't think it's a matter of Richard 101 as opposed to Advanced Richard. His continuous recutting of the Specialty classics leaves a bewildering trail. The VeeJay stuff, though mostly inferior, does have its own sound, so you know what it is when you hear it. I kind of like the material I heard on the "sweater" CD I referred to---I just wanted to know from whence it came. I don't have the Modern stuff, but I do have memories of hearing a little on the radio and thinking it was indeed note for note, but without the fire and ferocity of the Specialty sessions. Seemed to me the drummer(s) on the Modern stuff were tentative. On the other hand, yes I am curious about all the music that could be ours if only....well, you know.

Took another look at the red-covered Richard CD that will be available in February 2008 (go to CDNow, enter Little Richard, sort by Release Date). Unless my eyes deceive me, in the upper left corner, as part of the title graphic, is the ACE logo. So, maybe this will indeed be the Modern stuff. Be still my heart!

Re. LR '08 release with red cover. Yes, it sure looks like an Ace logo! I would expect something like "For the First Time on CD! Little Richard Live in Atlanta! (Plus all his studio recordings on Modern)".

I have Ace Records on "Favorites" and travel there about once a week and look at "Coming Soon". So far, no scent of "Holy Mackeral" or "I'm Back"; not even a snippet of Slippin' And Slidin'" from that warm December night down South.

As I've written, I've exchanged friendly and informative e-mails with that first-class organization. May you wanna go to
www.acerecords.co.uk and tell them that the Cosmos is once again ready to rock and roll to it's most brilliant Quasar, Little Richard Penniman!

Yeah---that (Ace?)red cover CD sure looks intriguing. I think it's called "Rock Legends", which makes me think it's part of a series. Still, if it's the Modern stuff---well, great gosh-a-mighty!

The red cover CD, for which play.com has the tune list, contains Heeby Jeebies, which, as far as I know, Richard never re-recorded. So, at this point it looks like Specialty stuff to me.

Timo, if you are right, then all I can say is "Boo, Hiss!" Not directed at you, of course, but at the Fates, for decreeing the release of yet another CD of the Specialty classics.

If the new collection is Ace, and it's all reissues, maybe in the jacket liner notes there's an announcement something like "Coming in 2008 - the first CD edition of Little Richard's Modern sessions!".

As another Show-Biz King once sang, "Weeeelll, y'gotta follow that dream...!".

Went to Amazon UK to check out the mysterious red cover cd, and it says that the label is Universal. Does that mean that it is--- or is not--- Ace. From what Timo sez, looks like Specialty stuff again.

Curious as always, I went to Amazon UK again, and, as I suspected, the mysterious red cover CD is part of a series which includes, among others, Bo Diddley, Bill Haley, The Platters and the Righteous Bros. All coming out in February, as far as I can tell. Looks like the Modern stuff (un-overdubbed) will be on some other CD.

In the first entry in this thread, I referred to a CD I found on CDNow called "Long Tall Sally". It was wierd, because when I accessed the samples, it contained electronically overdubbed grunts, swishes and "sonic explosions" on "Tootie Frootie." Anyway, I got the CD (it's called the LT Series and features Richard in a cardigan sweater sitting at the piano) ----and, boy, is it awful! It uses the K-Tel '76 stuff as a bed for all kinds of electronic stupidity. I think it is trying to be a "remix" CD, but it is one terrible piece of work. Be warned---and be afraid.

Even with the effects, did they emphasize the drums so as to make it dance floor worthy? Sometimes these projects are successful in adding some "pop" to the original record.

On the other hand, the K-Tels/Audio Encores work best as stereo recreations - making the original instrumental aspect sound more "audible".

Edit of above for much improved syntax:

....original instrumentation more audible......

Thanks!

I would guess that you are correct---this is a "dance mix." The original K-Tel beds are there, but there is alot of electronic stuff added, and sometimes the tunes run right into each other. Drums aren't mixed upfront, as far as I can tell, though the bass drum used in disco/dance music does seem inordinately loud and pronounced. It might be ok as a dance thing, but for listening---ugh! Maybe I'm just too old-school!

I'm starting to get interested in buying the CD. To my knowledge, there are only *two* such instances of '76 re-imagined, shall we say, tracks. Probably the "Send Me Some Lovin' 1978" is one of the '76 takes with strings and voices(?).
I believe there's a Madacy label collection with an extended "Tutti Frutti" - either the original or alternate K-Tel take.
